Family Preparation Guide

How to Prepare for Your Family Photography Session:

A Guide for Stress-Free Memories

Your family photography session is coming up, and I can’t wait to capture these precious moments! To help you feel prepared, I’ve put together a guide with simple, caring tips so you can focus on enjoying your time together.

Planning Your Outfits with the Right Details

Choosing the perfect outfits can make all the difference in how your family photos come to life. Here are a few tips to ensure everyone feels comfortable and looks great:

  • Final Outfit Check: Take a few moments to gather each family member’s outfit the day before, including accessories or layers. Having everything ready helps avoid last-minute stress.
  • Comfort is Key: Select outfits that feel as good as they look, especially for children. Comfortable clothing helps everyone relax, making the session feel natural and effortless.
  • Finishing Touches: Consider shoes, socks, and accessories for each outfit. And if we’ll be going barefoot, do a quick check of nails, as small details like these make a big difference.

Day-Of Essentials to Bring Along

Packing a few essentials can make the session run smoothly, especially with little ones.

  • Snacks & Water: Non-messy snacks are great for a quick pick-me-up, and a little water can keep everyone refreshed.
  • Touch-Up Kit: Bring along tissues, wipes, a brush, hairspray and a small mirror for quick touch-ups as needed.
  • Comfort Items: If your child has a favorite item that helps them feel comfortable, bringing it along can make for some sweet, candid moments (and help soothe nerves).

Preparing for New England Weather

New England’s weather is famously unpredictable, so a few layers for each family member can go a long way in ensuring everyone is comfortable. If the forecast shows rain or extreme conditions, don’t worry! I’ll be in touch to discuss our options, including rescheduling if needed. My goal is always to create the best experience and capture your family in the most beautiful setting possible.

Setting the Tone for a Fun, Relaxed Session

It’s easy to feel nervous before a photo session, but remember, this is all about capturing your family’s unique connection. Here are some tips for creating a relaxed, joyful experience:

  • Stay Present: Let this be a special time together, a break from the usual rush of daily life. Enjoy each other’s company, and let me guide you through simple poses that reflect your family’s genuine moments.
  • Embrace the Unexpected: Sometimes, the unplanned moments are the most memorable – like a child’s unexpected laugh or a spontaneous hug. These are the moments that make your photos feel truly yours. Little kids especially can bring quite a lot of chaos to the moment, you will miss these days soon and looking back at the silliness will bring a smile to your face. Let's capture the REAL moments.
  • Relax and Trust the Process: Leave the details to me! My role is to make the session easy and enjoyable, so you can simply focus on each other. Whether kids are extra energetic or a bit shy, I’ll capture the unique spirit that makes your family special.

Thinking Ahead to Your Artwork and Final Products

As you prepare for your session, it’s also a great time to envision how you’d like to display these photos in your home. Whether you’re dreaming of a gallery wall, a large statement piece, or a beautiful album, thinking about the final artwork can help guide outfit choices and even color schemes for your session. Soft, neutral tones, for example, often work beautifully in most decor styles and create timeless pieces you’ll love for years to come.

I’m here to help with ideas and guidance on products that will best fit your vision. After your session, I’ll work with you to create something truly meaningful, transforming these moments into stunning pieces of art for your home.

Looking Forward to Beautiful Memories

Once your session is complete, I’ll take time to select and edit each image thoughtfully. Soon, you’ll have stunning portraits that reflect your family’s love and personality.

Thank you for trusting me to capture these memories. If you have any questions as your session approaches, feel free to reach out—I’m here to make this experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible. I can’t wait to capture this special time with you and your loved ones!
